Colombia police thwart plot to kill mayor with .38 walking cane

Medellin’s Metropolitan Police have arrested 21 members of a local gang accused of wanting to assassinate the mayor of the town of Itagui using a converted cane able to shoot .38 bullets.

The novelty weapon was found in the home of one of the alleged members of the “La Union”gang, that is active in Itagui, bordering Colombia’s second largest city to the south.

Prosecutors involved in the operation told local newspaper El Colombiano that the gang planned to use an elderly man to kill the town mayor with the self-made rifle.

The anonymous sources said the alleged assassination were to take place at a public event to promote the well-being of the town’s elderly population.

While searching the homes of other suspects, police found $40,000 in Colombian bills, four kilos of marijuana, a pound of cocaine, two handguns, and gang administration papers.

According to the prosecution sources, the gang wanted to kill the mayor because of his attempts to rid his municipality of extortionists.
