Police seize 2.4 tons high-quality marijuana

Colombian police on Tuesday seized 2,419 kilos of high-quality marijuana from a truck on a highway in the southern department of Cauca, following a tip-off from an informant on the weekend, reports El Liberal.

Authorities found the truck apparently abandoned by the side of the road, and discovered the drug packed into 50 yellow sacks.

According to the agents involved in the operation, the occupants of the truck fled when they realized that the police were going to apprehend them.

Cauca police announced that security on the Pan-American highway will be increased in order to prevent drug trafficking gangs from transporting illegal shipments.

Authorities believe the haul of drugs was destined for the Pacific coast port of Buenaventura, from where it would be dispatched to the U.S. The shipment was reportedly worth half a million dollars.

Police are investigating to find the owner of the illegal haul.
