Police mistake led to colleague’s suicide

Police have acknowledged they made a grave error by failing to take the service weapon off the policeman who committed suicide in a patrol car on Wednesday morning, reported Caracol Radio.

Sergeant Pedro Antonio Barajas Delgadillo shot himself in a patrol car early Wednesday morning after he was arrested for allegedly driving while drunk and causing a traffic accident in Bogota.

General Carlos Ramiro Mena director of the judicial police unit DIJIN to which Sergeant Barajas belonged, said the patrolmen failed to seize his weapon immediately after arresting him, leading to the tragic outcome.

The police are awaiting results from the autopsy to determine whether he had in fact been drinking when the accident occurred.
