Petro leaves Polo Democrático

Leading opposition senator Gustavo Petro left political party Polo
Democrático Tuesday following continuous disagreements with the party’s
leadership.

Petro is considered the frontman of the moderate wing of the social-democrats and in favor of joining forces with other progressive parties like the Liberal Party.

The party’s chairman, Carlos Gaviria, is considered more leftist and opposes alliances with other parties in the preparations for the 2010 presidential and congress elections. Gaviria’s leadership was reconfirmed at the party’s Congress held in Bogotá this weekend.

Petro did not say what his political plans are, but does not deny the possibility of forming a new political party with other progressive politicians.
