Passenger forces Colombian plane to make an emergency landing

A disruptive passenger forced an Avianca flight from Costa Rica to Medellin to make an emergency landing Thursday, reported local media.

According to reports, the passenger, who appeared either intoxicated or disturbed, got up and attempted to force his way into the cockpit shortly as the plane was approaching Jose Maria Cordova International Airport.

A fellow passenger, who appeared to be travelling with him, tried to restrain him but failed, at which point other travelers stepped in.

As soon as the disturbance occurred, the captain alerted air traffic control in Medellin to request an emergency landing, and contacted airport police.

Upon landing, the passenger was turned over to the authorities and hospitalized. His identity has not been confirmed.
