Paramilitary commander dies in prison

Demobilized paramilitary commander Diego Jose ‘Daniel’ Martinez (35) died in his Bogota jail cell Monday.

According to Colombia’s prison authority INPEC, the former member of the AUC’s Tolima bloc died of heart failure, but has surrendered the body to forensic experts to investigate if Martinez was poisoned.

“It’s a speculation that has come up and we have to wait for Medicina Legal [the Prosecutor General’s forensics team] to carry out the studies and determine if there was anything like this. If it is determined that there was a poisoning there will be criminal investigations carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office,” INPEC director Teresa Moya told W Radio.

The INPEC director said to be surprised by the paramilitary’s death. According to Moya there had not been threats or irregularities where Martinez was incarcerated.
