Number of foreign workers in Colombia grew 102% between 2007 and 2011

A report released by Migration Colombia revealed that from 2007 to 2011, the number of foreign workers in Colombia grew by 102%, local media reported Thursday.

According to news website CM&, Venezuelans and Americans have the highest number of admissions for employment purposes.

Sergio Bueno, Director of Migration Colombia, said the figures for foreign workers in Colombia were as follows: Venezuelans (20.92%), followed by Americans (14.72%), Mexico (7.23%), Argentina (7.21%) and Brazilian (6.9%), among others.

“Colombia is not only a sending country but also is a recipient of labor migration, during those five years there has been an increase in the flow of foreigners coming to work by 102% “said Bueno.

“Although tourism remains the primary reason foreigners visited Colombia, temporary work now occupies fourth place with a growing trend,” explained Bueno.

The figures that make up the study reveal that in 2007 the number of foreigners who visited the country was 19,000, while in 2011 it had increased to 59,000.

Bogota and Cartagena are the two cities most preferred by foreigners to work, according to the study.
