NGO requests ‘special treatment’ for ill prisoners

A human rights NGO requested special treatment for high-profile Colombian prisoners with health problems, reports newspaper El Tiempo Tuesday.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) called for precautionary measures in the detainment and treatment of ill prisoners Alirio de Jesus Rendon Hurtado, alias “Cebollero,” and Daniel Alejandro Surna, alias “Kener,” convicted members of the neo-paramilitary drug organization the “La Oficina de Envigado.”

“They could be in a grave and urgent situation, one that could cause irreparable harm,” the IACHR petitioned to the Minister of Foreign Relations, Maria Angela Holguin.

Cebollero, who is being held in a high-security prison in Itagui, Antioquia, suffers from a heart condition, for which he spent several months in a health clinic last year. He is detained for financing the criminal organization “La Union” and for his ties to the Oficina de Envigado.

The other prisoner, Kener, suffers from high blood pressure and intestine and kidney problems in the Palmyra high-security prison. The criminal, a former high-ranking member of the Oficina de Envigado, famously escaped from house arrest in 2008 where he was placed due to his health problems.
