New prison director at La Picota

The prision director who allowed former-politician inmates to host parties in Bogota’s La Picota prison has been replaced.

According to newspaper El Tiempo, La Picota prison is now being directed by captain Aldemar Echeverry and the former director, Himelda Lopez, has been transferred.

Former politicians in La Picota are being transferred to other prisons to finish their sentences. The first to go was former senator Juan Carlos Martinez who was transported earlier Thursday from La Picota to a block for former public officials in El Bosque prison in Baranquilla. The politician is awaiting trial for accusations of paramilitary connections and reportedly threw a party in his cell with political friends and a salsa star.
