Supreme Court to investigate resigned ‘parapoliticians’ too

Colombia’s Supreme Court issued a bill that allows the Court to
investigate politicians for their alleged links to paramilitaries also
when they have resigned.

The Court decided to change the law after Congressman Edgar Ulises Torres resigned when an arrest warrant was issued against him. Torres tried to avoid prosecution before the Supreme Court, because the Court is not allowed to investigate resigned politicians for crimes they committed during their legislation.

According to Judge Jaime Arrubla, five Supreme Court Judges are in favor for the new bill, four are against it. The bill will now be passed to “other competent bodies” before it becomes law, Arrubla told Caracol Radio.

Around 126 Colombian politicians are implicated in the so-called
parapolitics’ scandal that revealed ties between paramilitary death
squads and prominent Colombian political and economic personalities.
