Monday can be a difficult day to eat out in Medellin, as this is the one night that many restaurants in the city close. Not only is Sushi House, located in Medellin’s leafy and quiet Laureles neighborhood, open on a Monday, they have something that’s even harder to find in Medellin.
Given that Medellin is hundreds of kilometers from the sea and even further away from the spiritual home of sushi in Japan, I had low expectations for my first time sushi experience in this city.
When my better half and I arrived at Sushi House, the decor and staff were both cheerful, neat, and well-themed. The place was pretty much empty at 8pm on a Monday, but that allowed us to lounge up the back in peace, sitting on the floor at low, Japanese-style tables.
Pleasant surprise
We were delighted to find that the restaurant had a “two for one” deal on a large part of their selection, offered to dine-in customers and only on Mondays.
I chose the only vegetarian option, a reasonably priced dish called ‘Tibet,’ (about $8 for a full roll), a fresh mix of cucumber, avocado, mango and a light sauce.
My partner had a dish called ‘Ituango’ ($9.50 for a full roll) which was a crunchy mix of tempura salmon, cream cheese, avocado, with a sweet and sour sauce.
For desert, we shared a very sweet, Japanese-Colombian fusion dish that featured cheese and wrapped in a fried wonton skin.
We found out later that there was a ‘while you wait’ game involving a map of the world and a sheet of stamp-sized stickers with pictures of sushi on them. The staff were nice enough to let us take a set to play at home.
The “twofer” deal meant that in the end, our meal, including one beer, was less than $13.
At the end of the day, the sushi was tasty, but unless you are prepared to pay between $8 to $11 a roll at the regular prices, Monday might be the best day to visit Sushi House.
