Medellin hotel occupancy drops 13.5%

Medellin hotel occupancy rates dropped 13.5% in April compared to the same month last year, statistics provided by the city showed Thursday.

The decrease in visitors to hotels was felt hardest in Poblado, the city’s most popular tourist area, where the occupancy rate dropped 5.32 percentage points to 50,05%. The downtown occupancy rate fell 4.6 percentage points to 23.66%, while hotels in the western Laureles / Estadio / Belen districts showed a 3.17 percentage points rise and saw 38,95% of their rooms occupied.

Tourism statistic agency Situr based its conclusions on a poll among 79 hotels in the city. The agency’s report did not provide absolute numbers regarding hotel guests.

The drop in hotel visits does not coincide with the number of people traveling to the city; 1.1 million traveled to Medellin in April, which is the same as the same month last year.

While the city saw a 1.2% drop of people entering the city through the city’s bus terminals, the number of people entering Medellin through one of the two airports increased 8.66%.
