An intentionally released chicken ate part of a pile of corn that was exposed as art at the Medellin Modern Art Museum.
The chicken belonged to aspiring Medellin artist Daniel Escobar, who released his feathered friend to enjoy the artwork of the locally renowned Medellin artist Carlos Uribe.
The chicken’s feeding binge / act of vandalism was filmed by the young artist himself in March as part of a university project in which he wanted to question the definition of art.
His university project was supposed to “question what should be considered a piece that is considered art within the confinement of a museum.”
The chicken’s corn binge caused confusion among the guards, who apparently hadn’t seen a problem in allowing the animal entry to the museum.
In the video shot by Escobar, a guard is heard telling the artist that “if you don’t have permission, you can’t just release it like that. You just can’t.”
Following a few minutes of apparent confusion, one museum employee was able to carefully push the chicken off the top of the artsy corn pile.
Museum director Maria Mercedes Gonzalez confirmed that Escobar should have asked permission to release the chicken.
“I don’t find it very outlandish that a chicken goes to a modern art museum if there is a big pile of corn. I think it’s a very basic association: Mountain – corn – hen,” Escobar wrote his senior in an explanation of his action.
Uribe reportedly never responded.
