Man who kidnapped Colombian TV star sentenced to 44 years

A man who kidnapped and robbed TV presenter and actress Carolina Cruz, among numerous other victims, has been sentenced to 44 years and six months in prison for the crimes of kidnapping and robbery, Colombian media reported Thursday.

It was proved that Jose Fabio Cano committed hundreds of robberies with three accomplices. He must now serve his sentence in Bogota’s Modelo Prison.

Cano was the perpetrator of a crime locally called “millionaire’s rides.” This crime involves the kidnapper(s) drugging the victim and taking them to ATMs and/or their homes, forcing the drugged person to hand over money or possessions.

Cano was arrested first in January 2008. However, the arrest was declared illegal despite being him one of the 20 most wanted men in Bogota. In February 2009 he was recaptured and made to stand trail. Carolina Cruz was abducted in 2007 in the north of the Colombian capital.
