Man freed after knife attack on parents

A 20-year-old man from Medellin has been released after murdering his father and injuring his mother because a judge ruled that he was incapable of controlling his actions at the time.

Sebastian Camilo Rodriguez Arrubla attacked his father and mother with knives on May 2, killing his father and severely injuring his mother. He had returned home late at night and was intoxicated. He went into his sleeping parents’ room told them that the world was not for them, and then stabbed them. Police arrived and Rodriguez tried to stab them as well but was subdued after police shot him in the legs. He then tried to self-inflict stab wounds.

The defense attorney argued that Rodriguez was “in a state of temporary insanity.”

“Sebastian Camilo did not understand what he did and therefore [the judge] came to the conclusion … that he was not guilty and can be released from prison,” said defense lawyer Jose Abad Zuleta Cano.

Rodriguez now seeks to finish his studies and will continue living with his mother.
