Liga Postobon: Caldas claim place in final with victory over Santa Fe (video)

Once Caldas came from behind against Santa Fe with two goals either side of half-time, enough to secure their place in the Liga Postobon final against Junior.

After coming away from Manizales with a 1-1 draw, home side Santa Fe started as favorites and it was the Bogotanos who took the lead after 17 minutes. After being fed the ball by Omar Perez, Oscar Rodas shielded it from three Caldas defenders before finding enough space to fire home from inside the area.

However, Caldas maintained their discipline and made life difficult for Santa Fe, even if scoring opportunities were limited. The breakthrough came just minutes before half-time when a ball from the right found Jorge Nuñez unmarked just inside the area. Nuñez saw his first effort blocked by a defender but when the rebound fell to his feet he made no mistake the second time round and drove home low to the left.

Less than ten minutes into the second half, Caldas took the lead with a slightly fortunate goal from John Pajoy. Santa Fe keeper Camilo Vargas could not hold onto to a stinging long range effort from Elkin Calle and the ball fell to Pajoy wide of the goal on the by-line. Pajoy’s attempt to play the ball back across the face of the goal somehow evaded Vargas, and the Santa Fe defense and trickled over the line.

Despite a late a late assault on the Caldas goal, Santa Fe could not find a way through and Pajoy’s goal was enough to keep alive Caldas’ dreams of a third championship in three years.
