A landslide in Novita, Choco department, has left five people dead, at least 21 people missing and six injured, local media reported on Friday.
The mayor of Novita, Iber Antonio Lopez, believes that heavy rains and a nearby earthquake caused the landslide.
Most of the victims are miners and peasants who were working in a gold mine. “The situation is very critical. We need a lot of help … because Carmen de Surama [where the gold mine is located] is four hours away from Novita,” the mayor said.
Authorities advise local communities to evacuate the area in case new landslides occur.
