Judge who released Don Mario ally sentenced to 16 years

A Bogota judge who last year had ordered the release of ‘El Indio’, the alleged number two of the organization of reputed drug lord Don Mario, was sentenced to 16 years on Friday.

The Bogota Superior tribunal convicted judge Luis Eduardo Beltran of the illegal release of another drug trafficker in March 2009 when Beltran, despite the drug trafficker’s previous conviction, also ordered his release.

The judge had been in jail since June 2009, but was allowed to await final sentencing at home. Now that his sentence is known he will be taken back to jail.
