Judge orders release key parapolitics witness

A Bogotá judge ordered the release of Rafael García, former ICT chief
of Colombia’s intelligence service DAS, who uncovered links between high
government and security officials and paramilitaries.

García will be paid ten minimum wages (appr. US$ 2,500) compensation and is released under the condition he continues cooperating with the prosecution in the cases against parapolitics suspects, newspaper el Espectador reported Wednesday.

The ICT-chief spent four years in prison for having altered DAS computer files that were evidence in cases against officials with links to paramilitaries.

He is one of the key witnesses in the case against his own former employer, former DAS director Jorge Noguera. The former chief of the intelligence service is accused of having taken part in the making of a list of union leaders to be assassinated by paramilitaries among other things.
