Colombia’s Supreme Court turned down an offer of the country’s
Inspector General to mediate between the judicial branch and the
Presidency.
Supreme Court President Augusto Ibañez politely thanked Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez for the offer and said that according to the high courts there is no need for a mediation.
According to Ibañez, mediation would be necessary if there was discrepancy or difficulties, which now isn’t the case, because the court is simply fulfilling its constitutional task.
The court fears that agreeing to mediation could lead to unconstitutional compromises and that if President Alvaro Uribe obeys the law he would avoid disagreement with the judicial branch. “The Court is certain that is has never crossed the line or exceeded its functions,” Ibañez told Caracol Radio.
Ibañez added that the Court’s carrying out its job is not being against the State, but upholding the rule of law.
