Insignificant defeats for Tolima and Medellin

Both Deportes Tolima and Independiente Medellin lost their final games in the Liga Postobon regular season but knew that defeat would have no consequences.

Tolima lost 1-0 at Atletico Nacional with a goal from Ezequiel Maggiolo in the fifth minute but still finish the season in first place. Nacional had both Juan Perez and goalscorer Maggiolo sent off, and Tolima’s Franco Arizala followed late on. This does mean that he misses his side’s first semi final game.

Independiente Medellin finished in second place despite losing 3-1 at Millonarios. Luis Mosquera and Jose Mera put the hosts ahead in the first half, after which Edison Gimenez pulled one back in the 50th minute. Millonarios’ John Ulloque made it 3-1 in the 79th. Medellin had Luis Arias sent off in the final minutes, and he too misses the next game.

In Saturday’s remaining game, Deportes Quindio beat Deportivo Pereira 1-0 with a 48th-minute goal from Elkin Murillo. Neither side was still in contention for a top four classification.

Action continues on Sunday when five teams battle for the two remaining semi final berths.
