House appoints Representatives for referendum commission

Colombian House President German Varon Cotrino appointed the House’s
members of the commission that has the final vote on the referendum
needed for President Alvaro Uribe to run for a third term.

The Court President ignores a pending criminal complaint against members of the coalition, who wanted to disallow Varon Cotrino from picking the Representatives, because of his opposing views on the referendum. According to an opposition senator, coalition party broke the law when they withdrew the request for dismissal without the House having had the opportunity to vote on it.

The Court has not yet decided whether to investigate the complaint.

Now that both the Senate and the House have the members of the inter-chamber commission ready, the Commission can debate and vote on whether the referendum should allow President Uribe a re-election in 2010 or in 2014.

It is uncertain if the commission will be able to come to a vote before the end of the parliamentary year Saturday.
