Grenade explodes in Medellin bar: one dead, dozens injured

A grenade that exploded in a bar downtown Medellin Friday killed at least one
and injured dozens of people who were celebrating Colombia’s soccer
victory over Ecuador.

Authorities rule out the explosion was a terrorist attack, but say a fragmentation grenade exploded while being manipulated.

Police say that witnesses they talked to did not mention anyone throwing the grenade into the establishment where some 200 people were gathered at that moment.

Media reports vary on the amount of victims. According to El Tiempo, 21 people were injured, while Caracol Radio spoke of 42.

Medellin mayor Alonso Salazar visited victims in the hospital where he expressed his compassion to the wounded and the family of the deceased, but also expressed to be happy the city hadn’t be struck by a terrorist attack.
