Govt compensates victims of violence

The Vice President Francisco Santos announced Monday that 1,800 victims of violence in Apartado, Antioquia will receive COP3.5 billion (US$1.7 million) in reparations from the Colombian government.

This is the government’s fourth initiative to compensate victims of paramilitary and guerrilla violence.

Santos stressed the government’s complete commitment to guaranteeing the financial reparation of victims of violence by illegal armed groups, as well as ensuring that such violence would not occur again.

The Vice President said that the administration will pay COP300 billion (US$150 million) in compensation to victims in 2010.
