The political status will only apply to demobilized paramilitaries of low ranks who haven’t committed crimes against humanity or were directly involved in drug related activities, Colombia’s High Commissioner for Peace, Luis Carlos Restrepo writes to Colombian Congress.Those paramilitaries who did commit crimes against humanity or took part in drug trafficking will still be held responsible for those crimes.The Colombian Government is trying to prevent that the nearly 20.000 paramilitaries have to go to court one by one, which could seriously cripple the country’s judicial system, without serving the process of demobilization and reintegration.
