Botero’s giant house cat comes to Medellin

Weighing a little over a ton, “El Gato” (The Cat) is Colombian artist Fernando Botero’s newest gift to Medellin.

The12 foot by 4 foot bronze sculpture has been sent from Pietre Santa, Italy by the famous Colombian sculptor and Medellin native.

“El Gato’s” final resting place will be in the library park of San Cristobal, in the northwest of Medellin.

Botero himself along with Medellin’s mayor Anibal Gaviria will officially unveil the sculpture during a ceremony on April 2 in the San Cristobal Library Park.

Botero is the self-proclaimed “most Colombian of Colombian artists.” He is famous for his sculptures and paintings of voluptuous subjects, many of which decorate the museums and parks of his birth-city of Medellin.
