General criticizes announcement of Afghanistan troop deployment

Colombian army commander Freddy Padilla Thursday criticized General Gustavo Matamoros’ announcement that Colombia will send troops to Afghanistan, because providing such information is outside Matamoros’ jurisdiction.

Padilla said that President Alvaro Uribe and Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez are the only officials authorized to make such an announcement.

He added that making such an important decision required carrying out various studies and following a series of steps, which had not been done, W Radio reported.

Matamoros announced Wednesday that a military convoy of 60 Colombian soldiers specializing in landmine disarmament and elite operations will soon join Spanish forces in Afghanistan.
