Four Colombian restaurants have been included in Restaurant Magazine’s top 50 eateries in Latin America, it was revealed on Thursday.
Restaurant Magazine – a British publication – is famous for the widely anticipated”50 best” lists, with categories including individual continents and also the worlds top 50.
While Colombia does not have any restaurants in the world’s top 50, it is slowly moving up the rankings in Latin America.
Of the four Colombian restaurants to make the list Bogota’s Criterion, a homage to classic French cuisine, was the highest ranked at number 19. Run by brothers Jorge and Mark Rausch, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength in recent years. While classically French in preparation, the duo are known for mixing it up by incorporating Colombian ingredients.
The next restaurant, named after owner Harry Sasson and also in Bogota, is ranked 22 of the top 50. Well known for its “volcano of chocolate” and flame cooked meats, the restaurant and chef is a firm Bogota favorite.
Following quickly behind at number 24 is Andres Carne de Res in Chia. A Mecca for meat lovers everywhere, head chef Andres Jaramillo’s rough and ready restaurant has an extensive 19 page menu, replete with a plethora of meaty options and simple Colombian fair.
Last but not least on the list is El Cielo, also in Bogota and the brain child of 29 year old chef Juan Manuel Barrientos. Known for experimenting with Colombian flavors and techniques, the young chef is one of Colombia’s rising stars and last year El Cielo was considered one of the country’s top three restaurants.
