Medellín dedicates Christmas 2009 to water

‘Fountain of Lights’ will be the theme for this year’s annual Christmas lights spectacular in Medellin as a tribute to water. The city is investing 20 billion pesos to make water flow from trees, walkways, and overhangs in the streets.

“We’re going to involve the three elements that EPM represents: energy, water, and telecommunication,” said Federico Restrepo, director of Empresas Públicas de Medellín, a consortium of public business that organizes the event every year.

The 15 million bulb display starts December 5. Covering one mile, it will include various representations of waterfalls, waves, and rains, with some exhibitions reaching 130 feet.

New types of design and technology will be used, integrating water, light, and sound to give new affect to the programming. Shows will use colored LED lights mounted on fountains with circulating water to portray rhythmic figures jumping in the air in time with music.

This year 1,800 employees will work on the festival. Some changes to the city will be implemented, hoping to be of use for future projects.
