Colombia’s former narcotics director sent to prison

Former National Narcotics Directorate [DNE] Director Omar Figueroa has been transferred to prison, ending a period of house arrest, reported Colombian media Thursday

Judge Alvaro Weiss Bautista said “putting [Figueroa] in jail is necessary to send a clear message to the Colombian people; those who commit crimes as a public servant shall be deprived of liberty.”

Figueroa was convicted in November 2011 for the misappropriation of goods seized from drug traffickers during his time at the DNE.

He was initially put under house arrest, but that decision was reversed by Judge Bautista who described it as “a violation of society.”

Figueroa was transferred to La Picota prison in Bogota.
