A former president of Colombia’s Supreme Court demands more than $1 million from the government to compensate for illegal spying.
Yesid Ramirez, who finished his eight-year term as Supreme Court magistrate in September 2010, decided to sue several government agencies following a failed conciliation attempt by the country’s prosecutor general, said several Colombian media.
The former Supreme Court president was one of the victims of illegal wiretapping by state intelligence agency DAS, which is investigating for illegally spying on government opponents in politics, the media, human rights and justice.
Ramirez is demanding COP2 billion ($1.08 million) in compensation from the Colombian presidency, intelligence agency DAS and financial investigative unit UIAF, which the judge says are guilty of the illegal wiretapping.
The wiretap scandal implicates several of former President Alvaro Uribe’s closest aides and four former DAS directors, all having served under and reported to Uribe.
