Former congressman called to trial for parapolitics

Former senator Rubén Darío Quintero (Cambio Radical) was called to appear before court for his alleged ties to paramilitary groups.

Quintero is suspected to have received help from paramilitary head Freddy ‘El Aleman’ Rendón, the extradited brother of alleged drug kingpin ‘Don Mario’, to be voted into Colombia’s congress.

The former senator was current President Álvaro Uribe’s personal secretary between 1995 and 1997 when Uribe was governor of Antioquia. He’s been in jail awaiting his trial since late March.

The Supreme Court and the prosecution has called more than 70 politicians, mostly from Uribe’s coalition, to respond to their alleged links to paramilitaries.
