Former chairman Conservative Party to trial for parapolitics

Colombia’s Prosecution asked the Supreme Court to start the trial against former senator and chairman of the Conservative Party Ciro Ramírez.

The politician, a staunch ally of President Álvaro Uribe, is suspected of having had ties with the AUC’s Bolivar Bloc. He allegedly sought the help of the Bloc’s leader Henry Jésus Londoño to secure his victory during elections.

Ramírez has been under investigation since February 2007 after accusations of ‘parapolitics’ by demobilized paramilitaries.
