Former Bogota mayor to be heard over corruption

Former Bogota mayor and current prominent Green Party member Luis Eduardo Garzon will appear before prosecutors to explain his alleged corruption when granting public works in the capital.

Garzon’s interrogation is part of a larger investigation involving current mayor Samuel Moreno, who is accused of having demanded bribes in exchange for granting public works to construction companies. The unpopular Moreno denies the charges.

The former mayor will have to explain how the third phase of constructing the city’s mass transit system Transmilenio was granted to the Nule Group, also investigated for their alleged responsibility in the corruption scandal.

Bogota’s local government is being scrutinized by several financial, judicial and administrative authorities about the alleged corruption.
