Barcelona soccer club will be formally invited to play a match in Colombia’s second city Medellin, announced city mayor Anibal Gaviria.
The announcement was made during Gaviria’s recent visit to the Spanish city, with the mayor saying, “The game can be staged next year or the year after.”
According to Radio Caracol, officials at the Catalan club are warm to the idea, however it was not made clear which team the current European Champions would play at the Atanasio Giradot Stadium, which is home to both Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin.
Last week a fan died and several were hospitalized after fighting following a match between the two teams at the stadium.
It is hoped the match will stimulate Medellin’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
