FARC leader who escaped 11 years ago detained

Colombia’s Technical Investigation Team (CTI) has captured a FARC leader who had escaped from custody 11 years earlier.

Guillermo Garcia Salazar, who was head of the FARC’s urban Antonio Nariño Front, was detained in Soacha, Cudinamarca, near the captial Bogota. He had two outstanding convictions against him of 20 and 34 years for the crimes of kidnapping and the manufacturing and trafficking of weapons.

In March 2000, Garcia managed to escape custody after members of the guerrilla group attacked a group from Colombia’s prison authority INPEC who were holding Garcia, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
