FARC leader seeks peace process with Santos administration

In footage broadcast by news network Al Jazeera, FARC leader Guillermo Saenz alias “Alfonso Cano” proposed a dialogue with the incoming administration of President-elect Juan Manuel Santos.

Cano said the FARC were seeking dialogue based on five main issues: the agreement that grants the U.S. access to seven Colombian military bases, human rights, land rights, the political regime and the economic model.

The FARC leader proposed the dialogue despite the fact he believes “the triumph of Santos on June 20 guarantees the continuation of [outgoing Colombian President Alvaro Uribe’s] policies and strategies.”

“[Santos] has shielded the former government from being taken to international or national justice. He also sets himself the task of rearranging a political regime [which] is filled with illegitimacy because it has been taken over by drug trafficking, by administrative corruption, by impunity,” Cano continued.

The FARC leader also said that “the whole electoral process is rotten. It is characterized by terrorist violence in a substantial way.”

Uribe will hand power to Santos on August 7.
