FARC declare Partido de la U a military target

The FARC on Monday issued a death threat against members of Partido de la U, party of front-runner presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos.

The threat was written on a document left by the FARC’s Southern Block in a hotel lobby during a campaign event held by Santos in Florencia, Caqueta department, reports W Radio.

The document said that “the militants of the Partido de la U will be military targets.”

Upon learning about the document, Santos tore it up, and remarked that the Democratic Security policy has never closed its doors on having dialogue in good faith, but that up until now, all that they have seen from the guerillas are acts of terrorism against the people of Colombia.

Santos, former defense minister under President Alvaro Uribe, was formally selected by the Partido de la U to be their presidential candidate, after the referendum which sought to let Uribe run for a third term failed.

Santos, who is the front-runner in the upcoming presidential elections in May, is is closely associated with the U.S.-backed security policies that have made Uribe the nation’s most popular president, and helped Colombia escape its past image of violence and chaos.
