The Colombian government on Monday announced that FARC commander “Domingo Biojo,” political leader of the FARC’s 48th front, was killed in Sunday’s attack on a rebel camp in the south of the country that killed 22 alleged guerrillas.
According to Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera, Domingo Biojo was identified as one of the guerrillas who were killed in operation “Fortaleza II,” close to the Ecuadorean border.
The guerrilla leader was also a member of the FARC’s leading political body, the “Estado Mayor” and in charge of the “political work”of the rebels’ “Southern Bloc.”
Biojo, whose real name was Sixto Antonio Cabañas, was on the list of 50 guerrillas wanted by the United States to face drug trafficking charges.
Sunday’s attack was the army’s “most overwhelming blow to the FARC in recent years,” Rivera said.
The FARC’s 48th front that was bombed Sunday is held responsible for a recent attack on the town of San Miguel in the Putumayo department that killed eight policemen.
