Ex-policemen walk over 500 miles demanding fair pay

Six former policemen are marching over 550 miles demanding fair pensions, wages and benefits for public workers.

The group will make the daunting walk from a small town in the Narino department to Colombia’s capital, Bogota, to request that the government respect Law 4 of 1992, which addresses the benefits and wages of public workers.

“25 thousand veterans of the public force are missing this right,” the President of the Veterans Association and leader of this march, Luis Fernando Enriquez told Radio Caracol.“The current president of the Republic [Juan Manuel Santos] promised to address this issue during his campaign but so far he has not.”

The group’s first stop will be in Popayan where four more ex-policemen will join them on their march. The group hopes to continue increasing its numbers as they cross through the countryside.
