Boat owners end strike on Colombia’s Pacific coast

Coastal shipping on the Pacific coast of Colombia is expected to return to normal from Wednesday following an agreement reached at a meeting in Bogota to end the boat strike.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Pacific coastal fleet, industrial and small-scale fishermen as well as officials from the Energy and Mining Ministry. The meeting concluded ended Tuesday at 7PM, in Bogota.

The nine-day protest by boat owners over fuel prices, had paralyzed the Pacific coast and was about to cause serious transport problems and supply shortages in the villages of the region.

Although the ship owners demanded a $1.65 reduction per gallon of deisel, they agreed upon an initial reduction of $0.66, which will be valid only until May. After this the price may decrease further.

Nine-day strike cost around $3.85 million and affected more than 15 Pacific towns and villages.
