ELN, not FARC attacked memorial march: authorities

Colombia’s second largest rebel group ELN and not the FARC attacked the
march of policemen and soldiers commemorating the travels of Simon
Bolivar 199 years ago, authorities say. The bomb attack left one policeman dead.

An explosive device was set off on the route in the towns of Nunchia, Casanare and Morcorte, Boyacá when the troops were passing.

After the attack, units of both the police and army were sent to the area to recover the area and make sure no further attacks could take place.

Authorities initially blames the FARC for the attack, but now conclude it was the ELN after pamphlets of the rebel group were found nearby the attack.

Local sources told newspaper El Espectador there had been fighting between guerrillas and State forces.

The army and police officials taking part insist on continuing the march, but higher officials are considering canceling.
