Electric taxis arrive in Colombia

Colombia’s capital city Bogota on Monday rolled out a new sleek fleet of electric taxis.

Bogota, a city known for congestion and smog, began circulating a dozen of a total 50 new electric taxis.

These cabs, which stray from the traditional yellow design, are blue on the outside, and completely ‘green’ on the inside. Not only do the taxis not emit carbon dioxide or any noise when starting, but they also feature fully electric traction motors with internal rechargeable batteries.

In addition, these vehicles are more energy efficient than combustion vehicles, they do not produce any direct emissions into the atmosphere, and they do not require lubricating oil.

This pilot program was authorized in 2011 by the Bogota government in an effort to develop instruments and tools to sustain and promote policies for electric mobility.  The fleet was imported from China.

There will be four charging stations in Bogota, and the initial station will be located  near Tercer Milenio park and will have ten recharging ports.

Cab companies TaxateLite, Teleclub Taxis, Roxi Taxi, and Taxi Radio, won the lottery for these new vehicles.
