International soccer legend Carlos ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama made his first appearance in public with his newly pink afro Thursday, after having announced he would dye it as part of a breast cancer awareness campaign several weeks ago.

At a press conference in Barranquilla, Valdarrama told reporters he didn’t think twice about giving his iconic hairdo a makeover, as two of his family members have died from breast cancer.

Valdermma, who also recently announced he will be coaching Colombia’s first-ever indigenous national soccer team, has become something of an activist figure due to his outspoken support of various social causes.

The publicity stunt comes just three days before Avon’s Walk Against Breast Cancer scheduled to take place this Sunday in Bogota. ‘El Pibe’ said his new look will be on full display at Sunday’s walk, which starts at 9am in the Plaza Bolivar and currently has more than 60,000 participants signed up on Facebook.

Recent statistics show that four people a day die from breast cancer in Colombia.
