Ecuador demands full explanation of Colombia’s 2008 cross-border attack

Ecuador president Rafael Correa on Saturday said that his country needs to have all the information about Colombia’s 2008 attack on an Ecuador-based FARC camp before the two countries can resume full diplomatic relations.

Correa’s statement comes soon before he is set to meet his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe at a regional summit in Cancun, Mexico.

According to Correa, Colombia has so far failed to fulfill its promise to hand over videos of the bombardment or “copies of those damned hard disks of the computers of [FARC commander Raul] Reyes,” which Colombia claims to have found after the attack, and which led to accusations that Correa has received money from the guerrillas.

“There are many things President Uribe promised and hasn’t done yet. We are not able to completely restore diplomatic relations until we are completely satisfied in this,” Correa said in his weekly broadcast.

The planned meeting between Uribe and Correa is the first official meeting between the two heads of states since March 1, 2008 when Colombian armed forces killed “Raul Reyes” and 26 others in a FARC camp just across the border with Ecuador.
