Ecuador court rejects appeal to extradite Colombian officials

An Ecuadorean judge Thursday rejected an appeal for the suspension of extradition requests for Colombian Armed Forces commander Freddy Padilla and the country’s former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos.

The judge said there was no legal provision for the appeal, CM& reported Thursday.

The extradition request was withdrawn several weeks ago. The decision which was appealed by a provincial Ecuadorean prosecutor.

The court will continue to investigate Santos and Padilla, together with National Police Commissioner Oscar Naranjo and former Army commander Mario Montoya for the March 2008 attack on a FARC camp on Ecuador’s side of the two countries’ border.

The attack led to the rupture of ties between Ecuador and Colombia. The governments of the two countries are currently trying to re-establish economic and diplomatic ties.
