Ecopetrol president victim of identity fraud

State-owned oil company Ecopetrol has reported that criminals are running scams in various parts of the country in which they fraudulently use the name of the company’s president to do business.

Ecopetrol President Javier Gutierrez has had his name illegally invoked by scam-artists to sign contracts for the purchase and sale of vehicles or rental services, Caracol reported Friday.

The scams are said to have occurred in a wide range of cities that include Cartagena, Valledupar, Santa Marta, Cucuta and Bogota, prompting the company to make an appeal to the public to report any irregularities of this nature.

“The company invites people to refrain from trading [or] giving money, goods or services to persons who are seeking to gain advantage through the misuse of the name of Ecopetrol,” said a statement.
