Colombian soccer veteran Jhon Viafara has been banned from driving for two years after being caught intoxicated behind the wheel in Barranquilla.
Authorities suspended his license for two years and handed him a fine of about $500, while he must complete 40 hours of a speed awareness course.
He was caught in the early hours of Saturday at a police checkpoint, apparently in an evident state of drunkenness, which was subsequently proved by tests.
Viafara, 33, has enjoyed a successful career in Colombia, winning titles with America de Cali and Once Caldas, including the scoring in the final of latter’s 2004 Copa Libertadores success.
He later managed to carve out a career in Europe with English sides Southampton and Portsmouth, as well as Spanish team Real Sociedad, before returning to win another title with Once Caldas.
The current Junior de Barranquilla player did not show up for his hearing Thursday, nor was he represented by a proxy.
