Drug ‘kingpin’s’ killers convicted in Spain

The seven accused of murdering Colombian drug kingpin “Leonidas” Vargas were declared guilty by a Spanish court Monday, reports Caracol Radio.

The nine-member jury decided that Colombian Jonathan Andres O. carried out the killing, with the collaboration of six others.

At the trial, which was held in the Provincial Court of Madrid over the past four weeks, the prosecution requested between five and 28 years in prison for the defendants.

The murder of Vargas took place at a Madrid hospital on January 8, 2009. Vargas was being investigated at the time by Spanish authorities for his ties to the drug trade, and was on bail due to lung disease.
