Criminal and paramilitary gangs are still sowing fear in the coastal
area of the Chocó department, the local police commander said Sunday.
In an interview with Caracol Radio, Pizarro police commissioner Edilberto Beltran said that several criminal and paramilitary gangs are active in the region causing displacement and sowing fear among the primarily indigenous and Afrocolombian inhabitants of the regions.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe earlier this weekend said that drug related violence in the south western port town of Tumaco was surging because of the Armed Forces’ success in fighting illegal armed groups in the northern part of the country’s Pacific coastline.
